This week we spent time creating a Google site and a Wiki Space. I have not heard of either sites before, so I still have a lot to learn. Building the the Google site was interesting because I was able to customize it. The Wiki Space I am still trying to figure out. I had some trouble with the computers while creating the sites, and it also took some time trying to figure out how to edit the sites. Developing these sites is a way to use technology in the classroom, and connect to other people. I could use these sites as a resouce when looking for a job if I apply online. The sites are a good way to get my name out there because the internet is such a valuable source. I might look more marketable if they can see I am up to date on technology since technology is becoming more common in the classroom. The sites can be used in my content area because student will be able to set up sites as well. When the student set up their sites on Wiki Space, they can write journals too for like an English class I teach. This would be a way for me to see their reflections on a reading we did in class.
The OED technology standards that were met today are:
Design- We took time to design sites and look up information to attach links.
Technology and Communication Applications- Through building the sites we are able to communicate with one another by inviting each other to our sites if they are set private. Otherwise, most sites are to the public.
The ISTE standards that were met today are:
For students- We used Creativity and Innovation by building sites and personalizing them. Communication and Collaboration is also met because the sites allow us to communicate with the public and one another in the classroom. We can share our information with one another on the sites. The content standards are also posted. Digital Citizenship by placing limited information on the web to keep us safe. Technology Operations and Concepts is used because we set up applications to build the sites.
For teachers- All five standards are met. By having students build these sites, teachers Inspire Student Learning and Creativity. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments is met because technology is constantly improving, and it is important to keep students updated with technology. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning is used in the classroom when teaching lessons. Also allows parents and other members to be up to date with what is going on through the sites. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship by teaching safe and legal ways to use the web. And Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership by improving student learning through technology.
The Conceptual Core can be met because as teachers we are responsible for change and meeting social and human needs. Through technology we can keep students up to date because technology is changing constantly. Teachers are commited to lifelong learning and by improving teaching strategies students are able to be well prepared for the real world. So the most important part is that we are leader-educators to the students to help guide them in the right direction to their future.
